Kasi Grass or Kans Flower Crafts

It is also known as wild sugar cane, or Kans grass. Kans grass is a grass native to South Asia. It is a perennial grass, growing up to three meters in height, with spreading rhizomatous roots. Leaves are harsh and linear, 6 to 15 mm wide, which are white and erect, measuring 15-30 cm long, with slender and whorled branches, the joints covered with soft white hair. In Bengal, the appearance of Kans grass, Kash Phool feels heavenly, not only because it so lovely, the white against the green, but it is also a happy reminder that the festive season is about to begin. The first step is to cut and bunch the grass. It is reaped then sun dried and then made into bundles. Once this is done, the grass is first hand twisted and then a cycle ring is used to tighten the twists. Once twisted, the ropes are then arranged into bundles. The grass braids are handmade and the process is similar to hair braiding.

Sitalpati

Sitalpati is integrally linked with Bengali lifestyle. From the cane, the bust fibre is extracted in various layers as the quality of the Pati depends on the different layers of the cane used. The word ‘Sital-pati’ means cool-mat. The green cane is kept soaking in water before it is slashed/sliced into thin strips for making the pati. Then the fine strips are woven by skilfully joining and interlacing to shape into beautiful mats. The aesthetic appeal and utilitarian value of these mats have made them increasingly visible in large towns and metropolitan cities thus expanding their traditional market. The craftsmen have adopted, after the design trainings, the dyeing of Sitalpati strands with natural and vegetable dyes. However they nowadays use Azo-free dyes to add vibrant colours to the weave.

Kauna or Water Reed

Kauna is the local name for a reed or rush belonging to the family Cyperaceae which is cultivated in the wetlands of the Imphal valley. It has a cylindrical, soft and spongy stem which is woven into mats, square and rectangular cushions and mattresses by the women of the Meitei community of Manipur. The raw material for the craft is obtained by simple processing wherein the reed is cut near the base of the plant and dried in the sun. It is also smoked if it is to be preserved and stored for a longer time. The Kauna reeds used by the women artisans are smoked and stored for a period — to increase its shelf life — before being woven with basic tools. The reed’s flexibility, durability and water-resistant quality are its strengths. The mats are woven by interlacing the stalks with jute threads using basic and simple tools. The mats and cushions have a unique edge finishing which is done by hand.
